CHAPTER NINE: RELATIONSHIPS IN CONTEXT.

Life context makes relationships very interesting. Every relationship starts out with strangers. Uncertainty characterizes such a relationship. We usually communicate to reduce such uncertainty. Several strategies to reduce uncertainty are passive, interactive, and active. Observation occurs during passive strategy. Interaction allows us to approach an individual. When active, we acquire information from a third party. Our interactions are limited with acquaintances. Usually some of these acquaintances develop into friendships.

Three types of relationships are romantic, family, and work. Romantic relationships, as do most relationships, develop in stages. Most of our early relationships are with family members. At work, we develop relationships to our benefit.
